Overview of careers at Whitby School
Our careers programme ensures our pupils have the chance to explore their career options in a supportive environment through workshops, assemblies, visits from and to employers, universities and colleges, using our career’s platform Unifrog, PSE lessons and work experience.
We also explore employability skills in Year 7 leading onto how to write and speak about these skills through the later years, in preparation for job and apprenticeship applications.
Pupils in Years 11, 12 and 13 also have one-to-one career meetings with our level 7 qualified careers adviser, Ms Mackle, as well as UCAS help and support in the Sixth Form.
You can access our whole school careers programme here. This is reviewed at the beginning of each year, taking into account the impact of the programme on our pupil’s progression. This is assessed through pupil, parent and visitor feedback.
If you have a career related question or would like your child to have an early careers appointment, please contact Ms Mackle.
Gatsby Benchmarks
Our careers programme is based on the eight Gatsby Benchmarks:
- a stable careers programme
- learning from career and labour market information – please click HERE to access a guide to labour market information. You can check labour market information for most jobs HERE
- addressing the needs of each pupil/student
- linking curriculum learning to careers – our subjects in careers document can be found HERE
- encounters with employers and employees
- experience of workplaces
- encounters with further and higher education
- personal guidance – Ms Gail Mackle – Level 7 certificated in Careers and Guidance – independent advice offered.
- we evaluate our performance against the Gatsby Benchmarks each term and even though we are hitting 100% in every benchmark, we continue to improve our provision and add new activities on an ongoing basis.
